IN THE LIGHT
SATURDAY, MARCH 30 @ 8PM
The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill
a new choral-theater work by Thomas Lloyd
What is my place?
All these – All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out upon,
See, hear, and am silent.
Inescapably present in our historic moment is the struggle between ideals of individual freedom and ideologies claiming to prioritize the common good; democracy, capitalism, secular humanism, and the intrinsic value of art are put in opposition to authoritarianism, socialism, religion, and utilitarian art. Will we learn from them or be destroyed by them?
Thomas Lloyd’s second choral-theater work for The Crossing, In the Light, explores the strange and oppressive culture of a Cape Cod religious community recognized internationally for its choir. Despite the cult-like pressures placed on members, the desire to belong and the fear of being excluded make this a moving and universal story.
Tom’s previous work, Bonhoeffer, earned us our first Grammy nomination in 2017.
